Who we are
At the heart of Toormina, the Bongil Bongil Youth Collective (BBYC) brings together passionate young people and community members to lead projects, spark ideas, and drive positive change.
BBYC is all about belonging, creativity, and having a voice. With the support of local partners, we connect knowledge, strengths, and resources so young people can thrive — right here, in their own community.
Inspired by the Gumbaynggirr name “Bongil Bongil,” meaning “place of plenty,” we honour the Traditional Custodians of this land and the deep cultural significance it holds.
What we do:
Youth-led design & delivery – BBYC members work alongside the community to create projects that reflect real lives, needs, and aspirations.
Local collaboration – We build partnerships that support long-term, youth-driven change.
Shared leadership – Our work puts young people at the centre of decisions that shape their futures.
The BBYC is open to any young person in the Toormina area aged between 12-24yrs. We champion inclusivity, diversity and creating safe spaces where all young people feel welcome, respected and heard.
Local adults can also get involved by joining the BBYC as a supporting member or by applying to join the BBYC Committee (applications open annually).
As an adult member, you’re backing youth-led work, staying connected to what’s happening locally, and supporting young people to lead and grow.
Committee roles are open to both young people and adults and involve a more active role in leadership and decision-making. Supporting membership, on the other hand, is a low-commitment way to stay involved — with updates, newsletters, invitations to events, and opportunities to support or mentor when it suits.
Together, we’re creating a space where young voices lead and local ideas grow.
